Dangerous avalanche conditions. Even at lower elevations, extreme caution is required on the open steep slopes to the east and south-facing slopes. In addition, below treeline, there are numerous "terrain traps" because the snowpack is still shallow. For example, there are holes in the gully, which have been hidden by the current snowfall. Please observe the terrain carefully and consider what lies beneath the fresh snow. Snowfall is forecast to continue. Please plan your activities with this in mind.
Yesterday (January 1), we received no reports of new avalanches in mountain areas.
Snowfall began late yesterday afternoon and amounted to about 30 cm in the upper treeline. This snowfall was accompanied by strong westerly winds. Slopes from the treeline to below treeline that was not affected by yesterday's sun and winds would increase instability due to the low density of snow in the lower layers. In addition, on slopes affected by yesterday's solar radiation, it is necessary to check the bonding of new snow with old snow.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy, with occasional snow until late afternoon, and a high of 3°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At the foot of Mt. Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is -1.3°C (as of 5 am). Snowfall will continue, with 30 cm of snowfall expected by 6:00 tomorrow.
