There has been some snowfall since yesterday. Those seeking higher elevations should be aware of newly formed slabs. As you walk, try to notice the change in the feel of the upper layer of snowpack transmitted through the soles of your feet or by sticking your poles in the snow. Using small, safe, convex terrain and stepping forcefully is also a good way to get a feel for the slab's behavior. If you feel signs of instability, choose safer options, such as reducing the slope angle of the terrain you are skiing. Also, when visibility is not effective, be cautious for large start zones that may be above you. There is still little snow in the forest and many "terrain traps".
Yesterday (January 3), a size 1 loose snow avalanche by ski cuts was observed in the below treeline. No information was received at higher elevations due to stormy weather.
The conditions are the same as the previous day. The storm snowfall that began on the evening of January 1 is 40-60 cm in the upper treeline. From the treeline to the top, wind slabs are forming due to the strong northwesterly winds. In the forests unaffected by the wind, there is soft snow, but the bushes are still very thick. The interface between new and old snow is of concern, but no significant instability has been observed at this time. However, on the slopes that are wide open to the south, a hard bed surface has formed that is good for avalanches, so we need to assume that the danger level will increase as the snowfall increases in the future.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy skies, and occasional snow in the afternoon, with a maximum temperature of 3°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At the valley of Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is -3.2℃ (as of 5:00 am) and 4 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
