Travel and Terrain Advice

The weather is forecast to improve somewhat, so there may be some sunshine below treeline. In this case, the snow on the steep slopes facing south will change dramatically. Consider that the danger level will increase because a hard bed surface good for avalanches has formed under the stormy snow. In the forests unaffected by the wind, there is soft snow, but not yet enough snow cover. Please be careful of holes in the gully bottom and exposed bushes.

概要

Avalanche

No new avalanche reports were received yesterday (January 4). The higher elevations have not been fully observed due to stormy weather.

Snowpack

The storm snow since January 1 has reached 60-80 cm in the upper treeline. Observations below treeline indicate that this storm snow is slowly settling, but there is still insufficient sintering in the upper part of the snowpack. From near the forest treeline, wind slabs are forming due to the strong influence of northwest winds.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy, sometimes sunny, snowy in places, and a maximum temperature of 3°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At the foot of Mt. Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is -3.9°C (as of 5 am), and 2 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours. In the northern part of the area, at an elevation of 1,000 m, 15 - 20 cm of snow had fallen by this morning.
