Be aware of storm slabs that have formed from the snowfall since last night. On downwind slopes where new snow has accumulated more, avoid areas where the terrain does not support the snowpack, such as convexities where the snowpack can become more unstable. Underneath the new snow hides slopes that have melt-froze due to high temperatures and solar radiation. Check the bonding between the new snow and the old snow. Along the gully, there is very hard debris from avalanches caused by previous rains. Even if you feel that the snow cover is stable, continue with basic actions such as stopping and resting in a safe place. Proper group management based on terrain perceptions will reduce the damage of accidents should they occur.
Watch for future snowfall and wind intensity.
Yesterday (February 24), several size 1-2 glide avalanches or wet loose snow avalanches were observed Below Treeline.
The snow from the previous stormy weather has settled and there is fresh snow on it from last night. Snowfall has been heavier on the seaward side of the Myoko Mountains area, with 20-30 cm Below Treeline. This new snow has been deposited under the influence of northwesterly winds. The bonding between the melt-freeze crusts formed by rain and the overlying snow is in the direction of stabilization in most locations. On the other hand, faceting has been reported in the terrain pockets (where the surface snowpack is thin) in the adjacent Hakuba Mountains, so we will continue to monitor those terrain pockets.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northwest winds, snow, and a maximum temperature of 4°C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -5° (as of 5:45 a.m.).
