Travel and Terrain Advice

The avalanche danger level announced is as of the morning (current conditions). Avalanche danger levels increase with rising temperatures and solar radiation during the day. Notice how the hard, frozen snow surface in the morning gradually thaws, gets wetter, and loses its strength. Wet loose snow avalanches can become very dangerous if the slope is large and steep enough, increasing in size as they run down. Pay particular attention to large south-facing slopes. At lower elevations, the snow has melted considerably. Gully or creeks are cracking and holes are appearing in more and more places. Do not descend too far to the bottom of the gully and become inoperable. Carry sunscreen and plenty of water, and have a good day.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (March 14), several size 2 glide avalanches were observed that appear to have occurred within the past 24 hours.

Snowpack

The snowpack in the below treeline has entered a state of melting. Melting is progressing not only from the surface layer of the snowpack, but also from the lower layers, and expansion of glide cracks has been observed. At higher elevations, crusts are forming and the lower layer is soft. It means that it is a little bit difficult condition for ski.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds out of the south, north winds during the day, clear skies, and a maximum temperature of 18°C (13 m above sea level) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -2° (as of 5:45 a.m.).
