Travel and Terrain Advice

When you are going up to the high elevation, beware of wind slabs forming in pockets of extreme terrain. Snow on slopes unaffected by sun and wind is in good condition, but remember to check for "terrain traps" below those slopes. Overall, snowfall is not yet sufficient. Creeks are not filled and there are holes. Try to choose safer terrain. The weather is going worse and will be stormy tonight. Please plan your activities with this in mind. Happy New Year!

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday, a number of size 1 dry loose snow avalanches were observed on steep slopes affected by solar radiation.

Snowpack

In the treeline and alpine areas, wind slabs are forming on the downwind side under the influence of strong westerly winds. The winds are having a widespread effect, moving light snow from the upper layer. In addition, yesterday's fine weather and rising temperatures have settled the snow below the treeline. On the sunny slopes, the snow has become moist, while to the north it remains dry.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds south, later, north, cloudy, night, snow, and a maximum temperature of 7°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At the foot of Mt. Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is -1.6℃ (as of 6 am). A winter pressure pattern is forecasted to intensify, resulting in heavy snowfall. A snowfall of 30 cm is expected by 6:00 a.m. tomorrow.
