Travel and Terrain Advice

This is a day to be very careful where wind slabs are forming. This is because the lower layer of wind slab has very soft snow and is likely to be an unstable snow structure. Yesterday, there was also a very strong wind that caused the lifts to stop. Today, there are traces of that wind on the snow surface, so please look for them as you go. If you see slab formations, it is important to avoid them or choose slopes with sufficiently gentle slopes. If you choose simple terrain that is not affected by the wind, you will be able to enjoy a good day of powder riding. Remember to ski from a safe place and watch your friends ski from a safe place. At lower elevations, the wide-open glide cracks are hidden by this snowfall. Continue to make safe route choices until you are completely down the mountain. Have a good day.

Be wary of slabs forming on the leeward side of the ridge as well as on the sides of the branch ridge and on terrain with no underlying support.

On south-facing slopes where the influence of solar radiation is strong, pay attention to changes during the day.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (February 21), several size 1 storm slab avalanches were observed by skicut on very steep slopes Below Treeline. Due to the stormy weather, no information has been received at higher elevations.

Snowpack

New snow since early morning of February 19 had reached 50 cm in the southern part of the Hakuba Valley and 80 cm in the northern part by yesterday afternoon. This new snow is forming very soft slabs, which are on wet Melt Form surfaces at lower elevations and Melt-Freeze crusts at higher elevations. It has been observed that the bonding strength at the interface between the new and old snow is not bad at lower elevations. At higher elevations, however, the condition is unknown. Since the wind was strong enough to shut down the lifts yesterday, we need to be very vigilant for wind slabs at higher elevations.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, morning and evening, cloudy, partly snowy at dawn, and a maximum temperature of 3°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -11.6°C (as of 5:00 am), and no new snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
