Travel and Terrain Advice

With low winds and the possibility of broken sunshine we expect to see a higher number of people heading into the alpine. With this increased traffic be mindful of who is above or below you and use safe travel techniques when navigating terrain. Isolated pockets of slab wind slab will be found at higher elevation in protected areas and we expect newly developed cornice to be brittle and easily broken. At lower elevations pockets of higher volume storm snow overlie a the previous melt crust and have be reactive to single person loads. Please take the time to safely asses all avalanche terrain at all elevations until you are back at the trailhead.

Avalanche Problem

ウインドスラブ Wind slab

Wind slabs can still be found in protected areas across easterly slopes. Be wary of cross loaded features and convex rolls as possible trigger points around ridgetops.

ストームスラブ Storm slab

On southerly aspects a decreasing problem of slab formed within the latest storm exists. These slabs have been reactive to single person loads in isolated steep terrain features recently when the bond between the latest new snow and the previous melt crust becomes overloaded.

概要

Avalanche

Multiple size 1 avalanches have be recorded across the region over the previous few days and appear to be failures between the latest new storm snow overlying a firm melt freeze curst on solar aspects.

Snowpack

Sunshine and higher temperatures on Monday will have warmed the snow surface on southerly aspects likely leading to a firm start to the day on Tuesday. The lower snowpack appears well bonded and settled with our main focus on the upper pack within the latest storm snow from last week. We continue to monitor how bond between this storm snow and the previous crust surface develops. This curst can be found on southerly aspects at various depths and has provided a bed surface for the recent avalanche activity observed.

Weather

Broken cloud and sunshine is expected in the coming days with light northerly winds. Expect periods of light snow flurries throughout the week.
