Travel and Terrain Advice

It is a good day to head to the alpine area because of the weather and good snow conditions. Two points to note. Watch out for slabs on slopes with isolated terrains where the terrain does not support snowpack. The second is to look for newly formed wind slabs, based on the wind tracks left on the snow surface this morning and the current wind conditions, and avoid the slope if you see such a formation. If the wind and sunny slopes do not affect slopes, you will be able to enjoy dry powder skiing. Remember to control your speed. A fall in a backcountry can lead to many things, including loss of action due to equipment damage. Continue to manage your group wisely using safe terrain. Keep in mind that later in the tour, at lower elevations, the danger of wet snow from solar radiation may increase in the afternoon. It's the start of a three-day weekend, have a great day.

概要

Avalanche

No new avalanches were reported yesterday (9th).

Snowpack

The snow from the low pressure system on the 5th is further settling. And the snow from the subsequent weak snowfall on top of it. This new snow layer has not been accompanied by strong winter winds, so it remains soft at higher elevations. Over the past few days, clouds have been spreading across the valley, and a sea of clouds has sometimes developed around the 1,800-2,000 m elevation. This has resulted in the formation of crusts on the snow surface in some areas at higher elevations due to solar radiation. Surface hoar formation has also been observed.

Weather

Today, the area will be covered by high pressure, but is expected to be affected by a trough and cold air. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly and northerly winds, clear skies, cloudy from midday, snowy in places, and daytime highs of 7 °C for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation (Hakuba), the temperature is -10.2 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
