Travel and Terrain Advice

A very strong westerly wind is beginning to blow above mountains, so please explore its effects. Consider whether the upper layer of snowpack has a tendency to slab. There are also many things to pay attention to today, such as whether there are any large start zones above you, whether the terrain is convex enough to make it difficult to support snow accumulation, and whether shooting cracks are developing as you walk. Visibility is poor in the morning, making situational awareness difficult. Please use good communication with your companions, conservative route setting and careful terrain selection.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (11th), several size 1-1.5 storm slab avalanches were observed at the ski area's morning safety control. There was also a size 1 loose snow avalanche. Avalanches in the mountain area were not contained due to poor visibility. However, a size 1.5-2 storm slab avalanche was reported in the Hakuba area when weather conditions improved in the afternoon.

Snowpack

By yesterday (11th), there had been 30-50 cm of snowfall since the 10th. There were areas of weak bonding within the new snow, but this is being resolved at lower elevations, partly due to higher temperatures. Meanwhile, strong westerly winds are beginning to blow above the area, which could lead to the formation of wind slabs.

Weather

Today, the area will be affected by low pressure and a trough, but high pressure is expected in the afternoon. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, northwesterly winds, snow or rain during the day, cloudy before noon, then clearing, with a daytime high of 7 °C (13 m above sea level) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -6 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), and 2 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
