Travel and Terrain Advice

At lower elevations, this is a day of significant changes in avalanche danger during the day. With higher temperatures than yesterday, be on the lookout for wet loose snow avalanches and glide avalanches on slopes with glide cracks. Wet snow is so heavy that even small avalanches can easily scoot underfoot and push people off the slope. If there are trees, rocks, or other obstacles below you, the consequences can be deadly. Avalanches caused by wet snow can also occur in the forest if the slope is steep enough. Do not feel safe just because you are in the forest. Meanwhile, at very high elevations, the same wind slab hazards continue as the day before. Be alert for slabs forming in terrain pokcets.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (13th), several size 1-1.5 size loose snow avalanches and size 1 glide avalanches were observed at lower elevations. No reports of avalanches at higher elevations have been received.

Snowpack

At the foot of the mountain (Sekiyama Amedas, 350 m elevation), temperatures above 0 °C have continued since yesterday morning, with temperatures above 10 °C measured between 14:00 and 15:00 yesterday. As a result, wet loose snow avalanches and glide avalanches have been observed at lower elevations. Meanwhile, at higher elevations, the danger of wind slabs due to strong winds continues.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a southerly wind, daytime, westerly winds, sunny, occasionally cloudy, with a daytime high of 17 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -2 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
