Travel and Terrain Advice

As in the previous day, large open slopes that are already glide cracked are in a state of high potential for a large scale glide avalanche to occur. Sufficiently wet snow has no cohesion, so avalanches can occur even in the forest if the slope is sufficiently steep. Consider carefully what terrain you are in and what features the slope above you has. Remember that slopes with glide cracks will not stabilize immediately after this, even if the rain stops and the temperature begins to drop.

Avalanche Problem

Stay away from slopes with glide cracks. Snowpack strength does not recover quickly after precipitation stops.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (20th), many glide avalanches and wet loose snow avalanches were observed Below Treeline.

Snowpack

High temperatures and rainfall have wetted the snowpack sufficiently to reduce its strength. Glide cracks are expanding and causing glide avalanches. Currently, it is raining at the base of the mountain, but temperatures are also positive on the main ridge, and the snow is wet at all elevations. Gradual cooler temperatures are in the forecast and may change to snow at higher elevations. Even if the snow surface begins to freeze, it will not recover its strength quickly inside the snowpack (especially where glide cracks are in place), so caution should be exercised.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northeasterly winds, rain or snow, and daytime highs of 5 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -1 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.).
