Travel and Terrain Advice

Watch out for unstable snow that remains in terrain pockets. Be wary of slips and falls, as icy snow surfaces are hidden under thin fresh snow. Be careful when setting routes to avoid entering steep slopes. The heavy rainfall on the 21st has caused the snow to melt in the lower elevations. Some tour routes that are usually accessible are not available this year. Please plan carefully.

Beware of unstable snow in terrain pockets. Even a very small avalanche can cause you to lose your footing and slip because there is a very hard ice layer underneath.

概要

Avalanche

No new avalanches were reported yesterday (23rd).

Snowpack

The snow cover surface layer consists of a hard, Melt-Freeze layer with about 10-15 cm of fresh snow on top. No significant vulnerability at this interface has been reported to date. On the other hand, at lower elevations, the lower part of the Melt-Freeze layer is still wet from the rain.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy and occasionally sunny with a daytime high of 5 °C for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation (Hakuba), the temperature is -3.4 °C (as of 5:00), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
