Travel and Terrain Advice

Be alert for wind slabs formed by strong winds. In the northern areas of the Hakuba Valley, where there has been heavy snowfall, be more cautious. Even a small windslab can have serious consequences if there is a "terrain trap" below its slope. The effects of high winds can extend into the forest, so even in the tree line, pay attention to the snow conditions and the slope slope. Although a certain amount of snow has fallen, there is still very little snow at lower elevations compared to previous years. Please consider tour routes carefully.

Avalanche Problem

Strong winds are still prevailing, with westerly winds averaging nearly 20 m/s on the main ridge. Even below treeline, be very careful on slopes where wind-driven snow accumulates.

Be more careful in the northern areas of the Hakuba Valley where snowfall has been heaviest. There are areas in the tree line where the winds have decreased and snow is more likely to accumulate. If it is steep enough there, it is a day for prudent decisions.

概要

Avalanche

A size 1 wind slab avalanche was reported yesterday (27th) in the below treeline. No information on higher elevations has been received due to stormy weather.

Snowpack

Snowfall due to the passage of a low pressure system on February 25 and the subsequent strong winter pressure system resulted in a cumulative total of about 50 cm in the upper part of below treeline in the northern region. This new snow is moving with extremely strong winds. Melt-Freeze crusts are exposed in areas exposed to the wind and deeply accumulated in some areas. The effects of yesterday's gust winds were felt as far into the forest, with wind slabs forming in terrain pockets and reacting to skier triggered.

Weather

Today, the pressure pattern of high in the west and low in the east will gradually loosen, but is expected to be affected by a pressure trough and cold air. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy and occasionally sunny skies, snow in places until early afternoon, and daytime high temperatures of 6 °C in northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation in Hakuba, the temperature is -3.3 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.).
