Travel and Terrain Advice

This is a day to watch for unstable snow remaining in certain terrain. The recent snow is in the direction of stabilization, but be very careful in areas where wind slabs are forming. Notice slab formation by the condition of the snow surface and the feel of the snow underfoot. Wind slabs over time will increase in hardness and may give you the impression that they are stable. But don't trust it. Be especially aware of slab formations on terrain with no underlying support, such as convex or isolated terrains, and avoid such areas. Since warmer temperatures than yesterday are forecast, watch out for wet snow avalanches in the afternoon. The weather is expected to be stable, making it a good day for climbing and skiing. Don't forget sunscreen and plenty of water. Have a good day.

Avalanche Problem

ウインドスラブ Wind slab

The westerly winds became very strong yesterday afternoon (14th) and are moving the most recent snow to the leeward side. Imagine slabs on dry soft snow on the north side and on Melt-Freeze crusts on the south side. And if you notice a wind slab, avoid it. Ski cuts are not suitable.

Ratings are as of morning. Be careful of snow changes during the day on steep slopes where the effects of elevated temperatures and solar radiation are strong.

The danger of persistent slabs from ice layers or Melt-Freeze crusts formed by the February 21 rainfall and faceted snow that formed on top of them remains highly uncertain.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (14th), an avalanche accident with injuries occurred on Obinata-yama. A size 2.5-3 avalanche has been reported on the northeast slope near Happo One (elevation 1950 m) within the past 24 hours. In addition, size 1 dry loose snow avalanches caused by morning snowfall were observed at higher elevations, and size 1 wet avalanches caused by solar radiation and elevated temperatures were observed in the afternoon at lower elevations.

Snowpack

Snow from the recent snowfall on the snowpack surface is sintering, partly due to yesterday's high temperatures. At higher elevations, where the snow is still dry, wind slabs are forming due to the strong winds of yesterday afternoon.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, clear skies, and daytime highs of 15 °C for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation (Hakuba), the temperature is -4.5 °C (as of 5:00), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
