Travel and Terrain Advice

It will be a typical "spring day". In the morning we will be on the lookout for slides on frozen slopes, enjoy comfortable runs on corn snow just as the snow begins to loosen up, and then struggle with wet snow before noon due to high temperatures and strong sunny slopes, and then crusty, tough snow in the late afternoon. All of these are due to changes in the surface snowpack, so if you carefully observe the snow changes, you will be able to choose better slopes at the right time. On the other hand, glide avalanches, which occur on slopes with glide cracks, can be very difficult to predict. One thing to remember is that on days when there is a lot of meltwater, glide avalanches can occur even at night. For this type of avalanche, having a frozen snow surface does not guarantee safety. What is needed is to avoid such slopes. Today is the last avalanche bulletin for the 2023/34 season in the Hakuba mountain area. Thank you very much for your interest.

Assessment is as of morning. Numerous glide cracks have been observed, up to higher elevations. Consider the possibility of cracks beyond the convex terrain where you cannot see the end of the terrain.

Avalanche

Yesterday (6th), several loose snow avalanches of size 1-1.5 were observed.

Snowpack

At lower elevations, the entire layer of snow is wet with a snow temperature of 0°C and is not frozen as of morning. At slightly higher elevations, the snow surface may be frozen in the morning, but with rising temperatures and solar radiation, it quickly becomes wet, and by noon, water floats on the snow surface, making it stop-snow. At the higher elevations, good timing can provide pleasant corn snow, but it is necessary to choose clean slopes because in many areas there is yellow sand and dust floating on the snow surface. On the ridge tops, the ground is beginning to expose itself, and even near the treeline, the gully is cracking and there are numerous glide cracks.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, daytime, northerly winds, clear, nightly, cloudy, and a daytime high of 22 °C for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation, the temperature is 4.0 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.) at AMeDAS Hakuba. Yesterday, 17.5 °C (3 pm) was recorded at Amedas Hakuba, with a temperature of about 10 °C also recorded around 1,500 m elevation.
