This is the first day in a while that is not a major storm. While calming your flurry of activity, take a good look around and look for new avalanche tracks. If you spot an avalanche, act on the assumption that the snowpack is still unstable on a slope with similar characteristics (elevation, orientation, shape, etc.) to that one. Regardless of what type of avalanche hazard is present, choosing a slope with a moderate slope is the most effective risk-reduction technique. Please focus on basic behaviors such as stopping in safe areas and skiing one at a time. Have a safe and enjoyable day.
A hard snow surface layer does not mean safety. Beneath the slab is storm snow that has not yet gained sufficient strength. Be wary of slabs that have formed on the flanks of branch ridges and gully terrain. The most likely places to trigger this are where the slab is thin. Carefully observe the terrain and the snow cover surface layer. Ski cuts on hard slabs can be very dangerous. Reduce the risk by terrain rather than checking the stability of the snowpack.
At higher elevations and lower temperatures, sintering proceeds more slowly. We must act on the assumption that snow that has fallen in clumps has not yet gained sufficient strength. Many people avoid wind slabs and look for a location where the wind is less of an influence. However, we need to act on the assumption that if there is a slope there that is steep enough, an avalanche can occur. This is true even in the forest.
No report yesterday due to poor visibility and few mountain users.
Settling is proceeding slowly. Strong winds from the day before yesterday had formed wind slabs in the tree line. On top of that, 30-40 cm of yesterday's snowfall is on top. Above the treeline, strong northerly winds are still blowing and forming new wind slabs.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting high pressure today (25th), but with the influence of a pressure trough and moist air, it is expected to be sunny and cloudy from midday, with a daytime high of 6 ℃. At the AMeDAS Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -10.3 ℃ (as of 5:00), and 5 cm of snow has fallen in the past 24 hours.
