This is a day of varying danger depending on the degree of snowfall and wind. If wind and snow increase in the future, expect the danger level to increase accordingly. Choose your terrain carefully and check the bonding of new and old snow. Melt-Freeze crusts are buried on steep south-facing slopes. Glide cracks are forming in various locations from previous years. Please consider the possibility that they are hidden by new snow and act accordingly.
Note that at higher elevations, the surface layer of snow cover will be more of a slab feature due to the winds. Winds are currently southwest to west, but are forecast to shift to northwest later in the day. Please pay attention to the snow movement associated with that wind direction change.
No new avalanches were reported yesterday (14th). In the adjacent Hakuba mountain area, several size 1 storm slab avalanches were reported on slopes northeast to east of the treeline.
Melt-Freeze crusts on the steep slopes where solar radiation is strong, and fresh snow from last night on top of settling snow on the north side. Snowfall is currently heavy on the northwest side of the Myoko area, with more than 20 cm.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds out of the west, then northwest, slightly stronger, snow or rain, and daytime highs of 6 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -4 °C (as of 5:45 a.m.) and 11 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
