This is a very dangerous avalanche condition. Even in forested areas, avalanches can occur on very steep slopes. Even if you are below treeline, always think about whether there is a large start zone above you and whether you are in an avalanche track yourself. Because of the large amount of snowfall that has been occurring, the new snow is very deep. In "terrain traps" such as deep gullies and hollows, even very small avalanches can be deadly. For inexperienced groups, we recommend skiing within the ski area. If you do so, please observe the runs allowed.
A large amount of snow has fallen in a short period of time since early morning. Extremely strong northerly winds are also blowing.
Yesterday (16th), no avalanche data was reported in the mountain area due to few people entering the mountain.
Previous storm snow has been observed to be settling slowly at lower elevations. However, at higher elevations, there is a lack of observational data and a high degree of uncertainty. And since early today, strong snowfall has begun, accompanied by extremely strong northwest to north winds.
The pressure will be high in the west and low in the east, but high pressure is expected to gradually build up. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northwesterly winds, slightly strong winds, snow, from midday onward, sometimes cloudy, and daytime high temperatures of 3 ºC (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu area of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -8 °C (as of 5:45 a.m.), and 24 cm of snow has fallen in the past 6 hours.
