Travel and Terrain Advice

Even if snowfall weakens or stops, avalanche danger remains high. The structure is composed of relatively dense snow that has been moved by the wind and placed on top of the previously fresh snow. The new snow has not yet gained sufficient strength and has not yet fully bonded with the Melt-Freeze crusts that lie beneath the new snow. Below treeline, the glide cracks are hidden by the new snow and are difficult to discern. Where there are slope changes, please consider the presence of glide cracks and act accordingly. Inexperienced groups are encouraged to have fun on the ski slopes.

Avalanche Problem

Beware of slabs formed by snow moved by northwest winds. Hard snow surface does not mean safety.

ストームスラブ Storm slab

In terrain with low wind influence, fresh snow can be very deep. Consider terrain selection in terms of conditions that can bury even the smallest avalanche deep.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (30th), numerous storm slab avalanches were reported in the morning management of the ski resort. Size is 1-1.5, occurring in all directions. Due to the stormy weather, no information has been received in the mountain areas.

Snowpack

Snowfall, which began on January 29, brought 50-70 cm of new snow, with varying degrees of intensity. There were areas of weak snow bonding within the new snow, and yesterday the snowpack was sensitive to human stimulation. Due to the low temperatures, this vulnerability should continue today and should be considered and acted upon. In addition, extremely strong northwest to north winds began blowing yesterday afternoon. This is causing storm snow to redistribute. There is a lack of information and a high degree of uncertainty regarding elevation.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northwest winds, snow, evening to occasional, cloudy skies, and a daytime high of 3 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -7 °C (as of 3:45 pm), with 25 cm in the past 12 hours and 30 cm of snow having fallen in the past 24 hours.
