This is a day to watch out for unstable slabs that remain in certain terrains. The combination of very steep angles and terrain that is convex or unsupported are avalanche-prone areas. Even if you feel that the snowpack is stable, continue to follow the principled course of action: stop at a safe position and ski one person at a time. This will reduce the damage from accidents. In addition, glide cracks below treeline are difficult to see due to fresh snow. Take extra care where the slopes change.
Note the wind slab that has been there for some time. The snow surface may be hard, but depending on the terrain configuration, the slab may still be responsive to human stimulation.
Watch out for unstable slabs that remain in terrain pockets. Slope angles are critical.
Yesterday (1st), several size 1 loose snow avalanches were observed at very low elevations. In each case, the elevated temperatures wetted the snow surface and reduced its strength, causing it to react to ski cuts. No reports were received at higher elevations, partly due to poor visibility. Many avalanches of size 2-2.5 were observed in the adjacent alpine Hakuba Mountains area, likely occurring within the past 24 hours.
At lower elevations, storm snow has been observed to be settling steadily. However, an incident was reported yesterday below treeline in the Hakuba Mountains area, which is connected to the Myoko Mountains area. Below treeline, slabs that have not yet fully strengthened should be considered to remain in terrain pockets.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, northerly winds during the day, cloudy, sunny before noon and in the evening, with a daytime high of 7 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -6 °C (as of 5:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
