Variable conditions exist across the region after yesterday’s temperatures rise. A surface freeze is likely at lower elevations making skiing and riding challenging. Glide cracks remain a concern as they are widespread below 800m. The latest storm snow has covered some of these features making them hard to see from above. Pockets of wind slab may still remain at higher elevations on easterly aspects, look for signs of fresh wind pressed snow or cornice formation to indicate where this instabilities may be found.
Pockets of wind slab may still exist at higher elevations. Be wary of wind loaded features on easterly aspect in the treeline and alpine.
As temperatures lower there may be a possibility of glide slab activity. With the unpredictable nature of glide releases, avoidance will be your best option any failure will have high consequence.
No new activity has been observed in the previous 24 hours across the region.
Warming temperatures and a brief period of rain on the 16th resulted in the upper snowpack becoming moist and heavy below 1000m on all aspects. Temperatures dipped below freezing overnight likely producing a widespread surface crust at lower elevations. Limited observations have been made from the alpine but it is believed pockets of wind slab will remain around ridgeline and cross loaded features and further investigating is required to confirm reactivity.
The current north westerly airflow will continue with light winds and periods of snow flurries throughout the day. Temperatures will lower during day.
