In areas where new snowfall has occurred through this morning, watch for storm slabs that have formed on steep slopes. If you sense that the upper snowpack has slab tendencies, choose safer slopes, avoiding areas with convex or isolated terrain, which are more likely to trigger avalanches. Below treeline and treeline, there are numerous glide cracks, which are hidden by storm snow. Pay attention to the turning slopes.
There is a moderate westerly wind blowing with significant snowfall in the northern part of the mountain range. Be on the lookout for steep slopes with slab tendencies in the upper snowpack.
Yesterday (23rd), several size 1-2 storm slab avalanches were reported below treeline. They were mainly triggered by ski cuts.
The overall stormy weather cycle is over. However, snow clouds have entered the northern part of the mountain range, resulting in 20-30 cm of snowfall through this morning. The lower layers of the time-lapsed stormy snowpack are more stable due to sintering and consolidation, but there are still elements of instability in the upper layers. Careful judgment is needed as there is a lack of information at higher elevations.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting westerly winds, snow, and a daytime high of 4 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -13 °C (as of 5:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
