Travel and Terrain Advice

This is a day to watch for unstable snow remaining on certain terrains. Those going to higher elevations should be alert for wind slabs that have formed on convex or unsupported slopes. The previous storm snow that constitutes the middle layer of snowpack is settling steadily. This makes for a snowpack structure that provides good support for skiers' feet and allows for great riding even at slower slope angles. In addition, the snow near the snow surface is well dried by radiation. Choose simple terrain that is not affected by the wind and control the speed at which you ski. Warmer temperatures are forecast for today. Pay attention to the changes in the surface snow on steep slopes with strong sunshine. Have a great day.

Avalanche Problem

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (24th), a number of size 1 dry loose snow avalanches or size 1-1.5 storm slab avalanches were observed on the north side of the mountain area where snowfall occurred.

Snowpack

In the northern part of the mountain range, where snowfall continued yesterday, be especially aware of the instability remaining in the snowpack upper layer. At higher elevations, wind slabs are forming in the westerly winds, which should still be considered triggered by human irritation. On the steep inner slopes of the outer rim, watch out for slabs formed by cross loadings.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting westerly winds, later, southerly winds, cloudy, sunny before noon, and a daytime high of 8 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -12 °C (as of 5:45 a.m.), with 30 cm of snow having fallen in the past 24 hours and no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
