Fresh winds slabs have continued to grow across easterly aspects due to the latest westerly winds. We have made limited observations in the alpine but is expected that these slabs may be reactive to human triggers near ridgeline. At lower elevations, a sun crust of variable thickness can be found below the latest new snow. Lower visibility may make route finding difficult but identification of where the latest new snow has landed is needed to avoid hazards. Be wary of natural trigger points such as convex rolls and cross loaded features on easterly aspects today.
Continued snowfall throughout the day yesterday with moderate to strong winds from the west have transported the latest new snow onto lee slopes creating winds slabs at upper elevations. Be wary of wind pressed snow on easterly aspects and in cross loaded features.
Loose dry activity may occur in sheltered steep terrain where the latest new snow may not be wind-affected.
A natural size one avalanche was observed on an easterly aspect at 950 metres in the Niseko region.
On the 26th snowfall which was heavier in the south and west combined with westerly winds creating wind slabs on easterly aspects. Windward slopes have been stripped and are firm in exposed areas. At lower elevations, a sun crust now lies under the latest new snow with multiple crusts found in the upper pack. Fresh cornice formations are brittle.
Winds will remain moderate to strong throughout the day from the west. Snow flurries are set to decrease by afternoon with temperatures rising towards the evening before a southerly change at the end of the week.
