Travel and Terrain Advice

The higher elevations to the north will retain a winter look, while the lower elevations to the south will make for a spring day. Those seeking higher elevations should be aware of unstable wind slabs remaining in terrain pockets. The ridge has been pounded by strong north winds, exposing hard snow surfaces, so be on the lookout for slips and falls. At lower elevations, notice changes in the snow due to daytime warming and solar radiation. The appearance of snowballs is a sign that the snow is becoming unstable. Because of the abundance of snow this season, glide cracks are forming that are very deep. Be aware of the changing slopes. Have a good day.

The winds, which had weakened yesterday afternoon, have picked up again since mid-night. Watch out for new wind slabs that have formed by this morning. With warmer air and higher temperatures in Alpine, slabs are forming quickly. Be on the lookout for slabs that have formed in areas where the snowpack is likely to be unstable, such as convexities.

Watch out for unstable slabs that form on very steep slopes, unaffected by the wind.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (27th), several size 1-2 slab avalanches were observed on the east to south facing slopes. In addition, size 1-1.5 dry loose snow avalanches were observed on very steep slopes at higher elevations, and size 1 wet loose snow avalanches were observed on lower elevations on the southern slopes.

Snowpack

Yesterday (27th) was a day of winter and spring living together. At higher elevations, there was instability due to the most recent snowfall, and at lower elevations, wet snow was observed due to the strong solar radiation. Higher temperatures than yesterday are forecast for today, so the effects of these temperatures need to be taken into account.
