Travel and Terrain Advice

It will be a day of spring. Watch out for changing snow conditions on slopes where strong solar radiations and high temperatures will have a significant impact. Wet snow is very heavy and can easily scoop a person off their feet and cause them to fall. If there is a "terrain trap" below you, the consequences can be serious. Because of the heavy snowfall this season, glide cracks are forming that are very deep. Be very careful at the turn of the slopes. Bring sunscreen and plenty of water. Have a good day.

Rating is as of morning. Strong sunshine and high temperatures affect the steep south-facing slopes, so watch for snow changes during the day.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (27th), several snowballs were observed on the south slope at lower elevations. No new avalanches were reported.

Snowpack

According to yesterday's observation information, the most recent fresh snowfall at higher elevations was slight. And in some areas, strong westerly winds have scraped off the snow surface, exposing hard Melt-Freeze crusts. At lower elevations, the snow surfaces were wet or soggy due to the effects of solar radiation and high temperatures. Expanded glide cracks have also been observed.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a southerly wind, clear, occasionally cloudy skies, and a daytime high of 12 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -5 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 24 hours.
