This is a "spring day" with higher temperatures than the day before predicted. Catch the change from frozen slopes in the morning to slopes that thaw, lose strength, and wet loose snow avalanches during the day. Glide cracks, hidden by previous stormy snow, are beginning to open their mouths again, and their conditions are deteriorating. At lower elevations, be on the lookout for glide avalanches as well. The extreme cliff-like terrain could lead to the collapse of snow blocks. That snow block can weigh as much as 500 kg in one cubic meter, so even a small one can cause serious injury.
Assessment as of morning. Do not overlook the fact that the upper layer of snow will become wetter and less intense due to the rising temperatures and solar radiation during the day.
Assessment as of morning. Be alert for glide cracks that are formed by cliff-like or other extreme terrain. Do not stay below cracked slopes.
Watch out for unstable slabs that remain in terrain pockets.
Yesterday (February 28), a number of size 1 wet loose snow avalanches were observed below treeline.
Yesterday, the temperature rose, reaching 8.4°C at 13:00 at Amedas Hakuba (703 m elevation). Due to the strong sunshine, the snow surface layer was wet in the below treeline, and many loose snow avalanches occurred. With higher temperatures than yesterday forecast for today, it is necessary to consider that slopes that are frozen in the morning will lose strength during the day. In addition, slopes with glide cracks at lower elevations are at an increased risk of glide avalanches. Since it is difficult to predict when a glide avalanche will occur, the best course of action is to avoid being below it.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, clear skies, cloudy from midday, and a daytime high of 15 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -4.9 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours. At the main ridge (elevation 2,400 m), the temperature is -0.1 °C (as of 5:00), with northerly winds averaging 6 m/s and maxing out at 12 m/s.
