Travel and Terrain Advice

High temperatures have continued since yesterday, expanding glide cracks and destabilizing snow blocks on cliff-like terrain. Even if it does not start raining, the danger of glide avalanches is rising, so please avoid such slopes. Instead of going out to the mountains today, it may be more fun to ski on the nicely groomed courses at the ski resort. In the ski area, watch out for unstable snow blocks near the slope by the beginner course. If you see someone resting in such spots, be gentle and give them a word.

Avalanche Problem

Weak nighttime cooling and high temperatures yesterday resulted in a lot of melt water. Even if rainfall does not begin, consider slopes with glide cracks to be in poor condition. Be on the lookout for collapsing snow blocks on cliff-like extreme terrain. Do not enter slopes with glide cracks and do not stay below them.

概要

Avalanche

Some size 1 wet loose snow avalanches were observed in the treeline below treeline yesterday (1st). An expansion of glide cracks was also reported.

Snowpack

The snowpack is in a "spring cycle" of repeated Melt and Freeze. Yesterday, the Amedas Hakuba (703 m) recorded 13.8°C at 14:00, and positive temperatures have continued since then. With snow melting at lower elevations, glide crack conditions should be considered very poor. Freeze hardness has increased to near the main ridge, but the snow on the north side at very high elevations is still dry.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy, then rain, with a daytime high of 13 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -0.2 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours. At the main ridge (elevation 2,400 m), the temperature is -1.5 °C (as of 5:00), with northerly winds averaging 15 m/s and with maximum wind speeds exceeding 20 m/s.
