High temperatures have continued since yesterday, expanding glide cracks and destabilizing snow blocks on cliff-like terrain. Even if it does not start raining, the danger of glide avalanches is rising, so please avoid such slopes. Instead of going out to the mountains today, it may be more fun to ski on the nicely groomed courses at the ski resort. In the ski area, watch out for unstable snow blocks near the slope by the beginner course. If you see someone resting in such areas, please be kind and give them a word.
Weak nighttime cooling and high temperatures yesterday resulted in a lot of melt water. Even if rainfall does not begin, consider slopes with glide cracks to be in poor condition. Be on the lookout for collapsing snow blocks on cliff-like extreme terrain. Do not enter slopes with glide cracks and do not stay below them.
Ratings are as of the morning. The likelihood increases with the onset of rainfall.
Yesterday (1st), a size 1.5 glide avalanche was observed in a very low elevation forested area. Numerous snowballs were also reported.
The snowpack is in a "spring cycle" of melt and freeze. With high temperatures continuing since yesterday, consider the glide cracks at lower elevations to be in very poor condition. Freeze hardness has risen to alpine, but the snow on the north side at very high elevations is still dry.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the south, then from the north, rain, and partly cloudy until late afternoon, with a daytime high of 11 ºC (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is 6 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 24 hours.
