With temperatures cooling in during the morning today we expect the upper snowpack to lock up creating variable firm conditions across the backcountry. Isolated pockets of wind slab remain on upper easterly aspects . Glide avalanches remain a concern after multiple days of warm weather. Continue to avoid terrain below these features due to their unpredictable nature.
Isolated pockets of winds slab remain in the alpine and near ridge line on easterly aspects. Shown caution in steep entries and cross-loaded features.
As temperatures lower after a number of warm days, stubborn glide avalanches may occur as the snowpack stiffens. Avoid spending any time below these features.
A large natural size 2.5 glide avalanche was reported on a southerly aspect of Mt Shiribetsu yesterday
Previous warm temperatures has created a melt freeze crust on the surface up to 1000m. The upper snow pack on solar aspects contains multiple crusts. At higher elevations Isolated pockets of wind slab have formed on easterly aspects. Windward slopes are firm and stripped. The mid and lower pack is well bonded.
Air temperatures have lowered in the early hours of the morning with snow flurries starting which are expected to continue during the day. North west winds will be light to moderate today.
