Travel and Terrain Advice
Be aware of the instability of fresh snow remaining on steep slopes. Even if the new snow is shallow and the avalanches that occur are small, there is a hard Melt-Freeze crust underneath that can cause you to slip and fall if you lose your footing. If there are trees or other obstructions in the terrain, it can become a "terrain trap" with serious consequences. There are places where glide cracks and other obstructions are difficult to see due to this snowfall. Pay attention to the turn of the slope.

Avalanche
Several size 1 loose snow avalanches of size 1 wet avalanches were reported in the treeline below yesterday (3rd). All were caused by ski cuts or other human stimulation.
Snowpack
A strong snowfall since yesterday morning has resulted in about 20-30 cm below treeline. This new snow is on top of wet snow or hard Melt-Freeze crusts. Although the snowfall occurred under light wind conditions, the higher temperatures also allowed the new snow to settle, giving it the characteristics of a slab. Therefore, on steep slopes with large amounts of new snow, check the bonding of the boundary with the old snow.
Weather
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, later, slightly stronger, cloudy, snow or rain at night, and daytime high temperatures of 6 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -10 °C (as of 5:45 a.m.) and 18 cm of snow has fallen in the past 24 hours.
