Watch out for storm slabs that have formed on steep slopes at higher elevations. Hard Melt-Freeze crusts are buried under new snow. The situation is more likely to be triggered where the terrain is convex or where the terrain does not support the snowpack. Also, if you are going to ski cut, choose your terrain carefully. The hard crust below will catch your footing and you will slide off. On the other hand, at lower elevations, stay away from slopes with glide cracks. Even if the weather improves, the danger of glide avalanche will not diminish anytime soon.
At higher elevations, the winds were blowing from the southwest at midnight. Due to the relatively low temperatures of the snow on the north side, stabilization will take some time. Be wary of steep northern slopes with heavy snow accumulation.
Rainfall is expected before dawn. Even if the weather improves, consider the continued danger of glide avalanches at lower elevations. Stay away from slopes with glide cracks and watch for collapsing snow blocks on cliff-like terrain.
Yesterday (4th), a size 1 loose snow avalanche and a size 1.5 glide avalanche were reported below treeline.
There was about 20-30 cm of fresh snow below treeline since the morning of March 3, and it is settling. Snowfall from the south coast low did not have much impact on the Mt. Myoko area, but there was some precipitation earlier today. Limited observations below treeline indicate that the bonding between the new snow and the underlying Melt-Freeze crust is not bad. At higher elevations, a different situation is possible, so check the bonding strength between the new snow and the old snow.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a southerly wind, slightly stronger, later westerly, rain, sometimes cloudy, with a daytime high of 9 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is 0 °C (as of 5:45 a.m.) and 4 cm of snow has fallen in the past 24 hours.
