The new snow will improve skiing conditions however hard surfaces remain just below the new snow. Warm temperatures will promote slab formation over the various crusts that exist across the region. The storm has brought ~10cms of new snow so the storm slab is likely to result in smaller avalanches however as the storm continues and new snow totals increase, both the wind and storm slab problems will increase in likelihood and consequence.
Light to moderate North winds have re-distributed the overnight snow to leeward aspects. Pockets of old, stubborn windslab may still exist below the new snow.
The overnight snow is moist and heavy at lower elevations and may settle into a reactive slab particularly on aspects where it overlies a melt freeze crust or hard wind scoured surfaces.
No new avalanches have been reported in the past 24 hours
10cms of moist snow fell overnight across the region. This adds to settled moist snow on NE through NW aspects and overlies a melt freeze crust on solar aspects. West aspects were mostly scoured prior to the storm. The mid and lower pack is well consolidated.
A low pressure system to the East of Hokkaido is now drawing a Northerly flow across the region. Light snowfall is expected through the day today before becoming heavy snowfall tonight. Winds will be light from the North in the morning increasing to moderate in the afternoon. Temperatures will rise to a high of 3C in the valley and skies will remain overcast throughout the day.
