Travel and Terrain Advice

Dangerous avalanche conditions. A decent amount of new snow has fallen so far this morning. This new snow is accumulating under the influence of northwest winds and has a hard frozen surface underneath. At times like this, avalanches are more likely to be triggered where the new snow has slab characteristics. Observe the terrain carefully, avoid steep slopes, and look for safe routes. Also, hard, uneven snow surfaces are hidden under fresh snow. Please ski carefully.

Pay attention to the condition of the upper layer of snowpack and look for slab formations. Underneath the slab is a hard snow surface that is more prone to triggering. Avoid terrain that is prone to triggering, such as steep, convex slopes.

Check the bonding condition of the boundary between new and old snow. Avoid steep slopes and ensure a safety margin in terrain,

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (6th), several size 2 glide avalanches and size 1-1.5 wet loose snow avalanches, respectively, were observed at lower elevations in the forested area.

Snowpack

The snow surface is frozen hard after rainfall, and fresh snow (30-40 cm) from yesterday evening is on top of it. In addition, strong northwest winds are blowing and wind slabs are expected to form. In the mountains, check the bonding strength between the new snow and the old snow. Previously rough snow surfaces (e.g., snow blocks falling from trees, skiing tracks, debris, etc.) are hard frozen and hidden by the new snow.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northwest winds, cloudy skies, occasional snow until late afternoon, and a daytime high of 4 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature was -8 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), and 27 cm of snow had fallen in the past 24 hours. The Niigata District Meteorological Office is forecasting 5-15 cm of snowfall along the mountains of the Joetsu Region at 6:00 a.m. on March 7 in the 12-hour period ending at 6:00 p.m. today.
