Beware of triggering wind slabs on steep slopes just below the ridge. Act from small slopes to ensure bonding. Be especially careful at higher elevations where bonding is difficult to progress. Also watch for bonding of storm slabs on extremely steep slopes. At lower elevations, be aware of open glide cracks and the possibility of glide avalanches from cliff-like slopes with thin snowpack. Do not enter the lower part of such slopes or pass through them quickly. When regrouping after skiing, try to do so off avalanche terrain and in the safest place possible, such as on top of a ridge.
Be careful of the steep slope just below the ridge.
Beware of extremely steep slopes
Yesterday (7th), multiple wind slabs (size 1) were reported to have occurred on extremely steep slopes below treeline due to human stimulation. No observations at elevations above the treeline.
The boundary bonding is good, although there is about 40-60 cm of new snowfall on top of the crust caused by rainfall. A strong tenperature gradient is observed within the new snowfall, which may lead to weaker bonding in the future. In areas under the influence of strong northwesterly winds, the snow was blown away, forming wind slabs just below the ridge and responding to human stimulation below treeline. In addition, the effects of rainfall and elevated temperatures are expected to remain in the lower parts of the snowpack at lower elevations.
As of 5:00, 10 cm of snow had fallen in the past 24 hours at AMeDAS Fujiwara, with about 30-40 cm of snowfall at around 1300 m. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting high pressure at first, but due to the influence of a pressure trough and moist air, it will become cloudy and snow will fall mainly in the southern part of the country at night.
