Settled weather and clear skies will result in busy trail heads as people push into the backcountry today. Rising temperatures will create heavy conditions at lower elevations early in the day with wet slide activity expected in steep terrain. Fresh wind slabs are possible in the alpine and testing should be carried out on these pockets when observed on easterly aspects.
Increased wind speeds to strong at upper elevations from the west have transported fresh load onto easterly aspects.
Rising temperatures and sunny skies will promote wet loose activity in steep solar aspects and lower elevations today.
A natural size 1 wind slab avalanche was reported on an eastly aspect near tree line yesterday .
The north of the region has received up to 45cm of new snow over the previous few days with 20cm in the south. This latest new snow has begun to settle and overlies a thick crust with facets observed below. Strong westerly winds yesterday have stripped the windward side and deposited fresh load onto lee slopes on upper elevations.
A high pressure system over the country has taken hold with clear skies and temperatures rising to above freezing at lower elevations. We can expect settled weather for the next few days with light south westerly winds.
