Travel and Terrain Advice

Alpine, especially near the main ridge, still has northerly winds strong enough to form wind slabs, so watch for new slabs. Near the treeline, consider the possibility that pockets of easily triggered terrain may still have slabs of instability. Hard Melt-Freeze crusts are exposed or hidden beneath thin new snow. Today will be a hot day with strong sunshine. Bring sunscreen and plenty of water and have a good day.

Avalanche Problem

Slabs still remain uneasily in terrain pockets on isolated slopes. Also, enough wind is blowing near the main ridge to move the surface snow, so be alert for new wind slabs that have formed near the ridge and on the cross-loading slopes.

It was observed yesterday that there are still areas of snow from previous stormy weather that have not yet been completely cleared. Note the very steep terrain with high snow accumulation.

Ratings are as of the morning. Notice the change in snow during the day on a very steep slope at a lower elevation, where the effects of elevation and solar radiation are strong.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (9th) there was a size 1.5 storm slab avalanche on the east slope of Alpine. It was triggered by a skier. A size 1 wet loose snow avalanche was also observed at a very low elevation.

Snowpack

There is 20-30 cm of time-lapsed previous stormy snow on top of the Melt-Freeze crust. This snow is mostly on the north side of the Hakuba Valley and has been affected by previous strong northerly winds. Melt-Freeze crusts are exposed in areas where the wind is strong, and are too hard to ski through. Consider that the bonding of fresh snow and crust is not yet sufficient at higher elevations. Also, at lower elevations and on slopes where temperatures and sunny slopes have a strong influence, the snow surface has become wet and is frozen this morning.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds and clear skies with a daytime high of 11 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -6.5 °C (as of 5:00 am), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours. At the main ridge (elevation 2,400 m), the temperature is -10 °C (as of 5:00), with northerly winds averaging 13 m/s and a maximum instantaneous wind speed of about 15 m/s.
