Treeline Fair
Below Treeline Fair Daytime temperature rise and degree of solar radiation
信頼度:○ good □ Fair △ Low
In very high elevation alpines, watch for new slabs as winds are strong enough to form wind slabs. At the treeline, watch for unstable slabs that remain in terrain pockets. At lower elevations, notice changes in snow during the day. When snowballs start to appear, it is an indication that the bonding of the snow near the snow surface has decreased. Also watch for collapsing snow blocks on cliff-like terrain. Today will be a hot day with strong sunshine. Bring sunscreen and plenty of water and have a good day.
Slabs still remain uneasy in terrain pockets on isolated slopes. Also, at very high elevations, there is enough wind to move the surface snow, so be alert for new wind slabs that have formed near the ridge and on crossroading slopes.
Ratings are as of the morning. Notice the change in snow during the day on a very steep slope at a lower elevation, where the effects of elevation and solar radiation are strong.
Yesterday (9th), a size 1 avalanche occurred by ski cut at very extreme terrain below treeline.
30-50 cm of snow from previous stormy weather is on top of the Melt-Freeze crust. This snow, the previous strong winds and yesterday's high temperatures have taken their toll. In areas where the wind is strong, Melt-Freeze crusts are exposed, forming wind slabs on the leeward side. At very low elevations, yesterday's elevated temperatures have made the snow wet.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, northerly winds during the day, cloudy, sunny before noon, and a daytime high of 10 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -8 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
