Generally safe avalanche conditions. An avalanche danger rating of "1 low" does not mean that avalanches will not occur. Also, the JAN avalanche bulletin is not a "forecast" but a "current status" as of the morning. In Alpine and Treeline, watch for unstable slabs remaining in extreme terrain pockets. Below treeline, watch for wet loose snow avalanches on slopes affected by rising daytime temperatures and sunny slopes. Wet snow is very heavy and can easily topple people. Also, stay away from slopes with glide cracks. When passing under them, please move quickly and keep a good distance from your companions. Spring is approaching.
At lower elevation treeline. Stay away from slopes that already have glide cracks in them. Also, be alert for collapsing snow blocks in cliff-like terrain.
Assessment as of morning. Note snow changes during the day.
Yesterday (10th), a number of snowballs and size 1 loose snow avalanches of size 1 wet avalanches were observed below treeline.
Yesterday was sunny and the temperature rose significantly (703 m elevation, 16:00, 9.7 °C). Winds near the main ridge also weakened in the morning, making conditions more conducive to the snow surface and to the effects of solar radiation and temperatures. This also helped to resolve the snow instability of previous stormy weather. Weaker nighttime cooling and warmer air coming in from the south will increase the risk of glide avalanches at lower elevations.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, cloudy skies, rain or snow in places before noon and in the evening, and daytime high temperatures of 11 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -0.9 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours. At the main ridge (elevation 2,400 m), the temperature is -5 °C (as of 5:00), with northerly winds averaging 5 m/s and a maximum instantaneous wind speed of about 8 m/s.
