At higher elevations, watch for slips and falls on hard snow. At lower elevations, be alert for avalanches caused by wet snow due to high temperatures. Stay clear of slopes with glide cracks, as the danger of glide avalanches is rising. When passing under them, please move quickly and keep a good distance from your companions. In addition, snow blocks left on cliff-like terrain are unstable. Look up when resting or stopping to see if there are any such hazards above you. Some ski areas also have course restrictions against glide avalanches. Pay attention to the ropes and signs and try to abide by them.
With continued high temperatures and a large amount of meltwater yesterday, slopes with glide cracks should be considered unstable. Be on the lookout for collapsing snow blocks on cliff-like terrain.
The thickness of the wet snow surface layer combined with terrain factors can increase the magnitude of even a loose snow avalanche. Below treeline, be wary of steep, south-facing gully terrain.
Yesterday (12th), several size 1 loose snow avalanches were reported below treeline.
The snowpack is in a "spring cycle" of melting and freezing. Yesterday, temperatures were positive up to Alpine, with some rainfall in the afternoon. With a weak temperature drop during the night, the intensity of the snowpack is likely to decrease in the early morning hours at lower elevations.
