Travel and Terrain Advice

Be careful of slipping on hard snow at higher elevations. Strong northerly winds are currently blowing, and rainfall since the afternoon of March 12 has been firm up to around 2,000 m elevation, forming rain grooves on the snow surface. At lower elevations, the high temperatures and solar radiation are causing glide cracks to become more active. Stay away from cracked slopes. Also, when passing under such areas, move quickly and keep a good distance between you and your companions. Snow blocks left on cliff-like terrain are also unstable, so when resting or stopping, look up above you to see if there are any such hazards.

Avalanche Problem

Yesterday (13th), at the foot of the mountain (703 m elevation), the temperature was recorded at 11.2°C at 12:00 pm. A large amount of meltwater is slowly melting the snowpack. A frozen snow surface does not mean safety. There are reports of active glide cracking and snow wrinkling on slopes. Stay away from slopes with cracks.

Ratings are as of the morning. Don't miss the signs that the rising temperature and solar radiation during the day will reduce the strength of the snow on the snow surface. Wet snow is so heavy that even very small avalanches can easily scoop people off their feet and topple them over.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (13th), loose snow avalanches of size 1-2 wet avalanches were observed in all elevation zones. These occurred on the same day or the day before, and were both naturally occurring and human-triggered. They occurred particularly frequently on steep south-facing slopes at lower elevations. Widespread glide cracking was also reported.

Snowpack

Near the surface of the snowpack, the snow is repeatedly melting and freezing, and is turning into granular snow. Continued high temperatures will increase the thickness of the wet snow layer and gradually lead to larger-scale loose snow avalanches. This morning, the snow surface is frozen solid due to the cold nighttime temperatures, but watch for changes as it begins to melt with the warming daytime temperatures. Even though the snow surface is frozen, the glide cracks continue to move because of the thawing water. Glide avalanche alerts are still needed today.

Weather

As high pressure with cold air is moving eastward from the northwest, the Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, clear skies, cloudy mornings and evenings, and daytime highs of 12 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -2.5 ºC (as of 5:00 a.m.) and there has been no snowfall in the past 24 hours. At the main ridge (elevation 2,400 m), the temperature is -6.5 °C (as of 5:00), with northerly winds averaging 13 m/s and a maximum instantaneous wind speed of about 22 m/s.
