In the morning, be on the lookout for slides on hard snow surfaces at higher elevations and glide avalanches at lower elevations. The extent to which the currently frozen snow surface will Melt-Freeze and lose strength will be determined by the balance between the degree of elevated temperature and solar radiation and the effects of the cold westerly winds. Where the sun is weak and the effect of the wind on heat loss is high, the snow may not loosen much. On the other hand, on very steep south-facing slopes where there is no wind, the snow cover intensity may decrease rapidly. As you act, pay close attention to changes in the intensity of the snow surface.
Melting water generated by the high temperatures of the past days is slowly melting the snowpack. A frozen snow surface does not mean safety. Please stay away from cracked slopes.
Ratings are as of the morning. Don't miss the signs that the rising temperature and solar radiation during the day will reduce the strength of the snow on the snow surface. Wet snow is so heavy that even very small avalanches can easily scoop people off their feet and topple them over.
Yesterday (13th), several size 1 glide avalanches were observed below treeline. In addition, several size 1 loose snow avalanches were observed in the ski cut and other areas.
Near the surface of the snowpack, the snow is repeatedly melting and freezing, and is turning into granular snow. Continued high temperatures will increase the thickness of the wet snow layer and gradually lead to larger-scale loose snow avalanches. This morning, the snow surface is frozen due to the cold nighttime temperatures, but watch for changes as it begins to melt with the warming daytime temperatures. Even though the snow surface is frozen, glide cracks continue to move because of the thawing water. Glide avalanche alerts are still needed today.
As high pressure is moving eastward from the northwest, the Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting westerly winds, clear skies, afternoon to afternoon, cloudy skies, and daytime high temperatures of 11 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -2 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
