Travel and Terrain Advice

Be careful of slipping on hard frozen slopes. Today, temperatures are not as high as the day before and the winds are likely to limit melt on frozen slopes. Rough slopes are difficult to ski due to the frozen conditions. If you choose a clean, non-rough slope at a time when the snow surface is softening, you will be able to enjoy comfortable spring corn snow. Slopes with glide cracks at lower elevations are high-risk conditions (low possibility of triggering and serious consequences). Do not enter cracked slopes, and when passing under such slopes, keep a good distance between you and your companions and move quickly. The weather is getting worse. Have a good day.

概要

Avalanche

Several glide avalanches and loose snow avalanches were observed yesterday (14th) below treeline. Glide avalanches originate from extreme terrain with exposed rock.

Snowpack

Melt-Freeze cycles have resulted in the formation of slippery coarse snow on the south side. On the north side, due to wind and other factors, the slopes are mainly hard and frozen. At very low elevations, the lower layers of the snowpack are very wet. Due to an approaching low pressure system, the weather service is forecasting several centimeters of snowfall by tomorrow morning. If snowfall begins early, please pay close attention to the intensity of the snowfall.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, clear skies, cloudy skies, snow or rain in places at night, and daytime highs of 8 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At AMeDAS Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -0.4 °C (as of 5:00 pm), and there has been no precipitation in the past 24 hours. At the main ridge (elevation 2,400 m), the temperature is -5 °C (as of 5:00), with northerly winds averaging 15 m/s and a maximum instantaneous wind speed of about 20 m/s.
