Look for pockets of windslab in sheltered terrain that may be reactive to skier traffic. Skiing conditions are variable and challenging in places with a mix of crusts, wind scoured surfaces and good, cold snow in others. Glide slab avalanches are a concern throughout the spring season so take note of where these have formed and could potentially grow or release catastrophically.
Pockets of windslab can be found on terrain that was sheltered from previous NW winds.
Mild temperatures in the valley combined with limited overnight re-freezing continue to weaken the snowpack
No new avalanches have been reported in the past 24 hours
Storm snow has settled to ~20cms and overlies a rain crust in the BTL zone. On sheltered North and East aspects in the alpine and treeline zones, the storm snow overlies a well settled mid and lower pack. All aspects that were exposed to previous NW winds are scoured and hard. A new melt freeze crust has also formed on solar aspects up to ~800m.
A ridge of high pressure has settled over Hokkaido this morning however a new low pressure system is approaching from the South. Skies will be mostly overcast all day with light winds shifting from the South to the East later the day. No precipitation is expected until late this evening when moderate snowfall is expected to start. Temperatures will reach a high of 3C in the valley as freezing levels rise to 300m.
