Nicer weather today will provide the opportunity to travel higher and further in the mountains today. The new/old bond is improving however rising temperatures and solar input today will interrupt that process. Evaluate this interface and any instabilities within the storm snow before considering bigger terrain.
Moderate North winds during the storm have re-distributed storm snow to leeward slopes
The storm snow is settling into a slab and may need more time to bond to the various surfaces below
No new avalanches have been reported in the past 24 hours.
15-40cms of snowfall has accumulated across the region over the past 48 hours. The storm snow overlies a melt freeze crust on solar aspects, wind scoured surfaces on NW aspects, a rain crust up to 800m on all aspects and well settled snow on sheltered, polar aspects at treeline and above. The lower and mid pack are well settled.
A ridge of high pressure has settled over SW Hokkaido bringing calmer conditions today. Broken skies this morning are expected to cloud over with a chance of light snowfall this morning before clearing again later in the day. Temperatures will rise to a high of 2C in the valley with light NW winds.
