Be alert for newly formed wind slabs at higher elevations. Previous storm snow is resolving its instability, but caution is still advised in characteristic terrain pockets that are more prone to avalanche triggering, such as very steep terrain. Also, pay close attention to the snow conditions on the snow surface today, which will change dramatically as a result of the rising temperatures and solar radiation during the day. Wet snow is very heavy and easily scoots underfoot. Any "terrain traps" downslope can have serious consequences. It will be a hot day. Bring sunscreen and plenty of water and have a good day.
At higher elevations, winds have been increasing this morning. Watch for newly formed wind slabs.
Rating is as of morning. Note the elevated temperatures during the day and the decrease in snow intensity on the snow surface due to solar radiation.
Yesterday (20th), a size 1 avalanche was observed by ski cutters in the below treeline.
Previous stormy snow is on top of a thick Melt-Freeze crust, which is 40-60 cm. The instability that existed within this snowpack is dissipating, and no significant vulnerability has been observed at the crust boundaries. In addition, crusts are forming on the snow surface on the slopes affected by sunny slopes due to yesterday's sunny weather. On the northern slopes, the snow is still remaining dry.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the south, daytime, westerly winds, clear, morning to early afternoon, cloudy, and a daytime high of 16 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -4 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new precipitation in the past 24 hours.
