With the likelihood of rain falling in the region today the snow surface could become heavy and active in steep terrain. This trend will move to higher elevations as the freezing levels rise in the morning requiring the monitoring of snow conditions. Glide avalanche concerns grow with any rain event and terrain below these features should be avoided. Lee aspects containing fresh wind load may also become active if rained on so please be aware of what is above you if rainfall moves towards the alpine.
With bands of rain forecast today and the freezing level rising to above 1000 meters, we expect wet loose activity to occur in steep terrain.
There is an increased risk of glide avalanches today due to the combination of rain and warm temperatures. These events fail to ground releasing the full seasonal snowpack and therefore have high consequence, avoid time below these features in the coming days.
Westerly winds have transported the latest new snow onto lee aspects creating isolated pockets of wind slab on upper elevations. Be wary of the new and old snow bond on slopes with fresh of wind deposited snow.
No new observations have been reported recently.
Yesterdays 10 to 15cm of new snow was affected by moderate to strong westerly winds transporting fresh wind load onto lee slopes from treeline to higher elevations. Exposed areas have been stripped back to the previous melt freeze crust making terrain travel variable. Protected areas hold the best coverage however rainfall today will change the consistency of the surface early in the day.
Rising temperatures and rainfall are forecast for today. The freezing level will rise to above 1000 meters by the early afternoon. Moderate south-westerly winds will continue gusting to strong at upper elevations.
