In alpine areas, be alert for wind slabs in terrain pockets formed by strong winds. At lower elevations, significant temperature increases over yesterday are forecast. Watch closely for snow that is crusting in the morning, melting and losing strength. If you choose the right slope at the right time, you will have a good run. Have a good day.
Very strong winds continue to blow at very high elevations. Watch for wind slabs forming in terrain pockets.
High temperatures continue at lower elevations. Avoid staying within terrain with glide cracks. Also, watch for collapsing snow blocks that remain in cliff-like terrain.
Assessment as of morning. Elevated temperature and solar radiation during the day increased the likelihood of induction.
Yesterday (21st), many size 1-1.5 loose snow avalanches were observed at lower elevations due to ski cuts and other factors. There was also a size 1 wet slab avalanche.
At the treeline and below treeline, the stormy snow proceeded with settling. On all but the most northerly slopes, where there is no influence of the sun, crusts have formed on the snow surface, the thickness of which depends on the degree of sunny slopes and temperatures. In Alpine, extremely strong westerly winds have been blowing since yesterday morning. Those aiming for higher elevations will need to watch for wind-driven snow. Today, the forecast is for higher temperatures than yesterday, which will result in more snow melting.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting westerly winds, clear skies, and a daytime high of 19 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is 3 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new precipitation in the past 24 hours.
