Alpine Fair
Treeline Fair Depends on the degree of temperature rise and solar radiation
Below Treeline Fair
信頼度:○ good □ Fair △ Low
As with yesterday, this is a day to be on the lookout for wind slabs in alpine areas and wet loose snow avalanches or glide avalanches below treeline. At lower elevations, one should take into account the continued high temperatures and the large amount of meltwater throughout the night. Avoid slopes with glide cracks, and do not stay under them. Always be mindful of the slope above you when descending the valley line later in the ski tour. Snow blocks left on cliff-like terrain are extremely unstable.
Continuously very strong westerly winds are blowing.
Snow blocks remaining on extreme terrain are unstable. Do not stay under slopes with glide cracks.
The rating is as of the morning. At very low elevations, the surface snow is thickening and losing strength. Be aware of very steep gully terrain, even in the forest.
Yesterday (22nd), several size 1.5-2 glide avalanches were observed in the extreme terrain below treeline. In addition, numerous size 1 wet loose snow avalanches were reported.
Continuous and very strong winds in the alpine areas are causing the snow surface to scrape and redistribute snow. On the other hand, at elevations not affected by the wind, the snow is in perfect spring conditions due to high temperatures and solar radiation. On the steep southern slopes, the upper layer of snowpack is thick and wet. Very steep and long slope is prone to large wet loose snow avalanches.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a slightly westerly wind, cloudy, and sunny in the evening, with a daytime high of 18 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is 7 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new precipitation in the past 24 hours.
